The children's story Chicken Little cautions us not to be too quick to panic. This painting tells the opposite story.

Here the sky really is falling, but the characters stubbornly disregard reality. Futilely dragging a flawed and doomed ideology across the smoking battlefield, they forfeit their lives for an indefensible cause.

In the natural world, parts of the globe experience an annual apocalypse known as "Winter." Leaves wither, insects die, birds flee. The mammals, in their wisdom, go underground.

In the moments before things pitch into the abyss, leaves blaze red and life convulses in a climax of scurrying and burrowing. For an istant, the last day of autumn teeters brilliantly. Pictured here is its descent into dusk.

In Buddhism, the Lotus symbolizes pure potential–our ability to transcend the muck and mire of existance, even while our roots remain firmly planted in it.

The 1965 pop-folk protest anthem "Eve of Destruction" has always struck me in a similar way, blossoming defiantly from a time of impending madness with a simple aching beauty.

Symbolically, the image of Death on a carousel implies the cyclic nature of "The End."

I prefer at more literal take: Death visiting the amusement park, caught up in a rare moment of carefree abandon and lost in the thrill of the ride.
